Bottle store battle intensifies By Andrew King A BUSINESSMAN behind a planned liquor store in Harewood says he will not withdraw the application in the face of strong public opposition. Samarth Rajeshkumar Limbachiya has applied for a liquor licence at 2A Trafford St and told the Nor’West News he will await the outcome of a hearing. “It will be a normal bottle store, just a small one,” he said.

He said he will await the outcome of a hearing that will determine if the licence can be granted. Recently the Nor’West News reported residents were angry about the proposed bottle store because it was in a residential area, and was close to schools and parks. Those in the area say regardless of the size they do not want it in their neighbourhood. Resident Colin Fussell started

a petition to raise awareness of the licence and try to stop it happening. “The dairy is vulnerable with the price of cigarettes going up, then you add liquor. That adds another dimension and bigger problem,” he said. Breens Intermediate principal Nikki Clarke said it was easy enough to get alcohol without adding another store. “The size of the store doesn’t matter. I was surprised people

think we needed another one,” she said. Mr Fussell dropped the petition at the Caltex Bishopdale Service Station on Harewood Rd last week, and within an hour he had to return to drop off more due to demand. He said he has about six pages with 20 signatures on each of them each and predicted he would get a few more. Love Hair owner Robin Scott has Mr Fussell’s petition in her salon and said she doesn’t object

to the bottle store being there, she just does not want people drinking around the store or in nearby parks. “I don’t want to come to work every day and smell urine and have to clean up a lot of rubbish,” she said. Mr Fussell said the system for notifying the public is flawed and more needs to be done to let people near these developments know they are going ahead. •Turn to page 5

Mixed response to mall idea By Andrew King CHARGING Bishopdale Village Mall businesses a targeted rate, to be used to revitalise the struggling area has received a lukewarm reception. City councillors Jamie Gough (top) and Raf Manji suggested targeted rates could work and the money generated could only be used in the mall region for the purposes of bringing in more customers. But the idea has received mixed reaction from businesses. While the Bishopdale Business Association said it was a good idea, retail outlets in the mall said they would struggle to pay it. In September the Nor’West News reported that the eastern side of the mall was struggling in comparison to the western side which had more “drawcard tenants.” The eastern side mall has lost “anchor tenants” Mitre 10 and the Westpac bank will close its doors tomorrow, meaning remaining businesses are seeing a lot less foot traffic.

Bishopdale Business Association secretary Jenni Hague said it sounded like a good idea. “It would help the area look better and having the businesses involved is a good idea,” she said. Sports World Bishopdale owner and Bishopdale Business Association committee member Tony Ralfe said it would depend on how much businesses were expected to contribute. “Some of us are small . . . but I

would be all for it if it was a fair rate,” he said. Others said small businesses are doing it tough and would like to see a detailed plan and more tenants before any money was spent. “If it was planned down to the last cent then we could start looking at it as an option,” The Feed Shack Bishopdale owner Miles Tracy said. “It would be a better idea when we had a full house,” Ma Baker

owner Nicky Garven said. The businesses would be part of a business improvement district and Cr Gough said they have been popular all around the world. A BID means the city council would partner with the business sector to improve a local business environment and boost its economy. The way the rate is calculated is established during the establishment phase of the BID programme and is tailored to best meet the needs of the business community it is applied to. “I think they [targeted rates] would be a good idea, if it was supported by local business,” Cr Gough said. Development Christchurch Ltd is meeting with businesses to find out what they believe will get the mall attracting customers again. In Brief JONES ELECTED CHAIR Former city councillor Ali Jones has been elected chairwoman of the Papanui-Innes Community Board, with Emma Norrish as deputy, at its inaugural meeting on Wednesday. Both served on the Shirley-Papanui Community Board last term. David Cartwright will lead the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board as chairman, with Sam MacDonald elected as deputy. CRASH STOPS TRAFFIC Traffic was held up for about an hour after a car rolled at a Bishopdale intersection on Wednesday. A woman was rescued from her car and taken to Christchurch Hospital with moderate injuries. St John sent an ambulance and first response unit to the scene at 3.46pm. ROAD CLOSURES There will be no entry from Rossall St onto Aikmans Rd tonight while work is carried out. The top end of Aikmans Rd, from Papanui Rd to Akela St, will be one-way going west as repairs to a major wastewater pipe, the Wairakei Collector, are undertaken. The detour to get to Papanui Rd from Aikmans Rd will be Akela St, Cox St and Office Rd.

Lymphoma Moya is a beautiful 4yr old Bull Mastiff cross who until earlier this year had been a perfectly healthy young dog. Her owners had noticed that over the past few days she hadn’t been quite her normal bouncy self, had gone off her food and developed a swelling under her throat. They bought her to the clinic and although on examination she seemed quite well she not only had enlarged lymph nodes around her neck but also around the front of her shoulders and at the back of her hind legs. Causes of this could be infection, an allergic reaction, immune mediated disease (where the body kills off its own cells) or cancer. Fine needles aspirates (FNA’s) were taken of Moya’s lymph nodes and sent to a veterinary laboratory. Taking an FNA is a painless procedure and in the majority of animals can be done without sedation. A small needle is inserted into the tissue that you want to sample and a small amount of cells are collected and put onto a slide.

Unfortunately, the results that came back from the laboratory confirmed that Moya had a malignant form of cancer known as Lymphoma. This form of cancer is one of the most commonly seen in dogs and often involves multiple organs around the body. To find out where the cancer had spread to Moya had blood tests and thoracic and abdominal x-rays and ultrasound scans performed. The Lymphoma had spread to organs within her chest and abdomen as well as within her lymph nodes – she had high stage B cell-Lymphoma. The results were discussed with her owners who decided that they would like to go ahead with treating her further. With this type of Lymphoma treatment is not surgical, but medical; usually with chemotherapy. We are in contact with a number of specialist Veterinary Oncology clinics in Australia and we contacted them straight away. Within 24 hours they had produced an entire report on Moya, her cancer and different chemotherapy options that they recommended. These treatment options varied from palliative care with steroids through to multidrug chemotherapy options. Moya’s family decided to go ahead with the preferred primary treatment option lasting 15 weeks. Moya started her chemotherapy the following day coming into the clinic every Friday for a blood test to check her red and white blood cell levels and for administration of her drugs intravenously. Throughout the entire duration of treatment, she was very well behaved and tolerated the chemotherapy drugs extremely well, with hardly any noticeable side effects. She was always ready for her treats and walk after her drugs had been given! At the end of the 15 weeks Moya was in complete remission and four weeks later still appears to be. Her owners report that

she is better than ever and when she visited last week she was rolling around as normal for her tummy to be tickling whilst we were trying to take her blood test! There is a chance that the Lymphoma will come back but for the moment she is happy, has a new lease of life and is enjoying her time at home with her family. Informing a client that their special friend has a form of cancer, is one of the awful parts of my job. It is such a dreaded disease with often fatal consequences and often at the time of diagnosis, the disease has well advanced. Due to many cancers having malignant potential, speed of diagnosis and treatment is necessary to have any chance of remission. Many hard decisions have to be made and that is when you can rely on us to do our job. We have the necessary skills and diagnostics to diagnose the type of cancer your pet has and then we employ the specialized services of Oncology consultants in Australia to get the most successful chemotherapy protocol for your pet. That’s often the hardest part as the administration of chemotherapy usually goes really smoothly. Pets rarely have side effects, the drugs are painless if given properly, your pet is treated as an outpatient and we often see improvement quickly, if we are going to be successful. I have first hand experience in the process as my beautiful dog Lola developed kidney cancer last year and received four rounds of chemo. By Murray Williams, Papanui Heritage Group. IN THE last article we looked at the issues confronting Papanui citizens in 1989 through the lens offered by the Papanui Herald. Today we travel back to April 17, 1973; at this stage the local community newspaper was called the Herald. It was owned, managed and edited by Des King who operated the weekly tabloid from premises at 22 Main North Rd. The Papanui library had decided to combat falling membership by allocating $50 to buy paperbacks as they appealed to young people and were also cheap in comparison to hardbacked volumes. Papanui High School was wrestling with the problem of a rapidly rising roll; the Parent Teachers’ Association wanted this stabilised in the interests of maintaining a community atmosphere although the principal, Mr E Fancy, could foresee that the day would come when 1250 students would attend the school.

THE ‘OINK’ BEATER: This model was promoted as the car of the future in comparison to the then current generation cars which were portrayed as gas guzzlers and money stealers. Hutchinson Motors, on the corner of Papanui Rd and Blair Ave, was advertising a new Ford Escort. This model was promoted as the car of the future in comparison to the then current generation of ‘oinks’ which were portrayed as gas guzzlers and ‘money stealers’. The price for a new

Escort was just over $3000, which may seem cheap for a new car but when translated to 2016 dollars would have cost $36,000 for a very basic model. Meanwhile, the Papanui Service Station was promoting its ‘Rub a Dub’ car wash which it advertised as the only fully automatic service available in Christchurch. This luxury cost $1.50 ($18 in 2016 value). Motorists who purchased their petrol at this outlet were also eligible to win ‘instant’ prizes. Suckling Brothers were offering positions as footwear machinists in their new premises ‘situated one minute’s walk from Northlands.’ The advertisement posed the question to locals ‘why go to town when you can work in Papanui?’ Four decades later there are few openings in local manufacturing as cheaper imports now dominate the market for consumer goods. Easter was imminent and most of Papanui’s oldest churches offered plenty of options for formal commemoration.

Raffle raises $25,000 for families

CHILDREN AND a charity hospital will benefit from more than $25,000 raised by the Rotary Club of Papanui. A recent trailer raffle run by the club in conjunction with Mitre 10 MEGA, and supported by Allprint, raised $25,361 after selling 8000 tickets. All proceeds will be shared between the Papanui Rotary Children in Need Trust and the Christchurch Charity Hospital. Trustee Tony Tizzard is delighted the trust’s share of the proceeds will support families with an identified need, such as enabling children to have school uniforms and attend camps. The proceeds will also assist the Canterbury Charity Hospital with the establishment of their two new oral surgery units. Rotary Papanui proposed the idea to Mitre 10 MEGA

It will add to his offices in Rangiora and Kaiapoi, as well as his mobile caravan service that operates once a month in Woodend and Oxford. Brightest young sporting talent OUTSTANDING TEAM: The Burnside High School volleyball team were rewarded for their national dominance over the last two years, taking home the most outstanding team of young sportswomen award. They shared the award with Villa Maria. Burnside won their second straight national title in Palmerston North in April. They defeated Tauranga Girls’ College in a tight four-set tournament final 3-1 (25-19, 25-27, 25-22, 26-24).

SPORTS THE 26TH Zonta secondary schools sports awards dinner was held on Thursday night. The annual event, initiated by the Zonta Club of Christchurch South in 1990 to celebrate the sporting achievements of talented young Cantabrians, is a highlight of the year for award winners. For many, recognition at the awards heralds the beginning of long-standing and highly successful international careers. The judging of the awards was undertaken this year by Anita Sutherland, Mike De Bono, Jon Peters,

Aaron Webb and Dave Harrison. They had the challenging task of selecting finalists and winners from a total of 150 nominations (counting teams as one) received from 21 schools in the Canterbury area, including Kaikoura, North Canterbury and the West Coast. Zonta International is a service organisation, made up of business and professional women, committed to raising the status of women worldwide. BEST SPORTSWOMAN: The ability to turn heads on the netball court and the water has seen St Margaret’s College student Lily Marshall (left) win the best all-round young sportswoman award. The highlight for Marshall came earlier in the year when she was named in the New Zealand secondary school netball team. The defender captained her school at the national secondary school tournament in Hutt Valley this month, where the team finished seventh. Marshall also represented St Margaret’s at this year’s Maadi Cup national secondary school rowing championship. She was part of the eight which finished second in the Levin Jubilee Cup final. The year 13 student also competed in a four which finished in the top 10 at the regatta.

MOST VALUABLE SPORTSMAN: Burnside High School first XV captain Cam Russell (right) took out the most valuable contribution to a team by a young sportsman award. Russell was the co-winner of this year’s UC Championship player of the year award. The flanker played well in excess of 50 games for Burnside in his four seasons with the first XV. After first making the squad as a year 10 student in 2013, Russell went on to captain the team in 2015. The year 13 student has also been a part of the Crusaders Knights under-18 development programme and this year helped Burnside win the South Island co-ed school championship.

honoured at 26th Zonta awards

OUTSTANDING YOUNG SPORTSWOMEN: Villa Maria College’s first XI hockey team also won the most outstanding team of young sportswomen award after securing their first ever national title this year. In September, the team won the Christchurch schools’ premier league before capturing their maiden Federation Cup title in Auckland. The team had only one loss over the entire season against St Margaret’s College in the premier league. It was also the perfect farewell for six students who played their final season for the school.

The St Andrew’s College clay target shooting team of Jacob Warnock, Lyndon Arundell, Jimmy Field, Mason Gardener and Laurence Arundell won the most outstanding team of young sportsmen award. They made history recently when they won the team points title at the New Zealand secondary school trap shooting championships. They scored 295/300 points, which has never been achieved before.

Tackling issues in Waimairi We continue asking city councillors in the north-west to give us their views on issues. This week newly-elected Waimairi city councillor Raf Manji talks about some of the issues he feels need addressing in the ward The predominant issue in the Waimairi Ward is the threat of new industrial activity on the land between Hawthornden Rd and Russley Rd, known as NWRA3. The independent hearings panel has ruled that access through Hawthornden Rd would lead to intolerable levels of increased traffic, especially heavy traffic, for local residents, which makes the area entirely unsuitable for industrial development. However, the landowners have challenged this finding at the High Court and the community is awaiting the outcome with interest. A second concern of equal importance is the impact of the upcoming industrial park at the MAIL site on traffic along Avonhead Rd, Roydvale Ave and the surrounding local street network.

POTENTIAL BOTTLE STORE: A new liquor store has been proposed for 2A Trafford St.

The community wants a restriction on heavy vehicles above seven tonnes from using these roads to minimise safety risks to school children and pedestrians. There are also concerns that there should be no parking spillover from the industrial site on to the residential streets. This is an issue that the community board will be able to look at soon. The community is also keep-

ing a close eye on the development of a 6.3ha rural site for residential living, which may put further strains on the water and sewerage network. Parking issues around the Russley Business Park and Avonhead Mall need addressing, as do general issues of traffic and congestion in the surrounding areas. The community would also like to work with the city council to promote public recognition of the significance and heritage of Avonhead Park Cemetery and look at developing a local community centre. We are fortunate to have a well-organised community group in the Waimairi Ward and I look forward to working with them over the next term.

We asked readers if they thought Harewood needs another liquor store, as one is being proposed for the cnr of Harewood Rd and Trafford St Graeme Wood, Harewood We are opposed to this liquor outlet being located at 2A Trafford St. The area is catered for at Bishopdale and also the new industrial area around 500 Wairakei Rd. Nunweek Park, which is close by, is a dumping ground for KFC and McDonalds litter, as well as cans and bottles. Cut the crime – stop the outlet opening. Scholarship for famine effort RANGI RURU students got behind the World Vision 40-hour famine, raising $3500 and earning the school a scholarship. More than a third of the entire student body took part in this year’s famine after Lily Lee and Willa Jones led the school in its fundraising drive. Because of their efforts the school was awarded a World Vision senior scholarship award.

Flossie van der Pol was chosen as the recipient of the scholarship which entitled her to four days of global education, leadership development and social action training in Auckland. “Meeting refugees at the Refugee Resettlement Camp [in Auckland] was really eyeopening as I could see how much they appreciated having security after their years of extreme hardship,” she said.

Mall-walking to stay fit By Hanna Reynolds NORTHLANDS ISN’T open, but Karen Couch is heading inside. She’s not alone. Dressed in walking gear, around 100 people are entering the mall, but they’re not planning to shop. Every Tuesday and Thursday at 8am, the mall opens its doors early to the Kiwifit walking group. The free community walking programme is a chance for people who may not be working to socialise while staying active. Karen remembered the exact day it started, April 17, 2005, and bakes a cake every year to celebrate. “I enjoy the friends. I miss it when I’m away.” It’s a good place to exercise “without tripping over trees or walking on dog poo and uneven surfaces,” she said, and the coffee afterwards was an incentive. Joce White, 71, has attended both weekly sessions since the earthquakes. “It’s pleasant, flat and warm and we stop for a coffee afterwards. It’s very social. You get to know a lot of people.” She used to walk around the mall three to four times before her back surgery but is now pleased to make it around the

It’s a social event. “This is the whole point, the laughter.” Heather Johnston, 74, is in her 10th year of setting her alarm early to attend. Heather had a fall when walking outside and the threat of it happening again on the uneven pavements keeps her coming back to the warm, flat space. Surgery is a familiar thread among the walkers, with hip and

knee replacements common. Having had her hip done four months ago, it was “use it or lose it,” for Barbara Wilson. For four years she has travelled 30min to attend the Thursday session and enjoys not having to watch for cars in the safety and warmth of the mall. Northlands marketing manager, Rebecca Sheppard said there were about 180 members of the walking group with an average age of 73. The group meets at the entrance near House of Travel on Main North Rd.

Best to hope that this worm found in the backyard of Star Media director Charlotte Smulders is the parent. If not, there may be a wriggly worm around Merivale even larger than this. The paving stone is half a metre wide – that is one king size worm.
