Fun for pre-schoolers in new courtyard Selwyn House Preschool pupils Ezeleial Yop (left) and Janelle Ho took their puppets outside into the newlydeveloped courtyard, while Willow Richards (below) had a turn on the new swing. Stage one of the pre-school redevelopment, on Merivale Lane, was completed recently and pupils went and tested out their new equipment. It includes new seating and planting boxes, decking area complete with cranberry plants, a bigger climbing area, a swing, garden areas and several artificial grassed areas including a hillock.

Bottle store battle intensifies By Andrew King A BUSINESSMAN behind a planned liquor store in Harewood says he will not withdraw the application in the face of strong public opposition. Samarth Rajeshkumar Limbachiya has applied for a liquor licence at 2A Trafford St and told the Nor’West News he will await the outcome of a hearing. “It will be a normal bottle store, just a small one,” he said.

He said he will await the outcome of a hearing that will determine if the licence can be granted. Recently the Nor’West News reported residents were angry about the proposed bottle store because it was in a residential area, and was close to schools and parks. Those in the area say regardless of the size they do not want it in their neighbourhood. Resident Colin Fussell started

a petition to raise awareness of the licence and try to stop it happening. “The dairy is vulnerable with the price of cigarettes going up, then you add liquor. That adds another dimension and bigger problem,” he said. Breens Intermediate principal Nikki Clarke said it was easy enough to get alcohol without adding another store. “The size of the store doesn’t matter. I was surprised people

think we needed another one,” she said. Mr Fussell dropped the petition at the Caltex Bishopdale Service Station on Harewood Rd last week, and within an hour he had to return to drop off more due to demand. He said he has about six pages with 20 signatures on each of them each and predicted he would get a few more. Love Hair owner Robin Scott has Mr Fussell’s petition in her salon and said she doesn’t object

to the bottle store being there, she just does not want people drinking around the store or in nearby parks. “I don’t want to come to work every day and smell urine and have to clean up a lot of rubbish,” she said. Mr Fussell said the system for notifying the public is flawed and more needs to be done to let people near these developments know they are going ahead. •Turn to page 5

CONGRATULATIONS to the outstanding young people who featured in the Zonta secondary schools sports awards on Thursday night. We have in-depth coverage of the annual awards on pages 6-7, with details of the winners and photos. Two names to watch out for in their respective sports over the next few years are St Margaret’s Lily Marshall, an outstanding netball prospect, and Burnside’s Cam Russell who was co-winner of the UC (rugby) Championships player of the year. Lily was judged best sportswoman and Cam most valuable sportswoman at the Zonta awards. There’s been a lukewarm response to an idea for a targeted rate on Bishopdale, page 3, businesses to help improve the shopping area. No surprises there! – Barry Clarke

Mixed response to mall idea By Andrew King CHARGING Bishopdale Village Mall businesses a targeted rate, to be used to revitalise the struggling area has received a lukewarm reception. City councillors Jamie Gough (top) and Raf Manji suggested targeted rates could work and the money generated could only be used in the mall region for the purposes of bringing in more customers. But the idea has received mixed reaction from businesses. While the Bishopdale Business Association said it was a good idea, retail outlets in the mall said they would struggle to pay it. In September the Nor’West News reported that the eastern side of the mall was struggling in comparison to the western side which had more “drawcard tenants.” The eastern side mall has lost “anchor tenants” Mitre 10 and the Westpac bank will close its doors tomorrow, meaning remaining businesses are seeing a lot less foot traffic.

CONCERN: The idea of targeted rates so businesses can drive their own projects in the Bishopdale Village Mall has come with mixed reaction. Long-time mall tenant Tony Ralfe says the idea needs to be fair. PHOTO: ANDREW KING

Bishopdale Business Association secretary Jenni Hague said it sounded like a good idea. “It would help the area look better and having the businesses involved is a good idea,” she said. Sports World Bishopdale owner and Bishopdale Business Association committee member Tony Ralfe said it would depend on how much businesses were expected to contribute. “Some of us are small . . . but I

would be all for it if it was a fair rate,” he said. Others said small businesses are doing it tough and would like to see a detailed plan and more tenants before any money was spent. “If it was planned down to the last cent then we could start looking at it as an option,” The Feed Shack Bishopdale owner Miles Tracy said. “It would be a better idea when we had a full house,” Ma Baker

owner Nicky Garven said. The businesses would be part of a business improvement district and Cr Gough said they have been popular all around the world. A BID means the city council would partner with the business sector to improve a local business environment and boost its economy. The way the rate is calculated is established during the establishment phase of the BID programme and is tailored to best meet the needs of the business community it is applied to. “I think they [targeted rates] would be a good idea, if it was supported by local business,” Cr Gough said. Development Christchurch Ltd is meeting with businesses to find out what they believe will get the mall attracting customers again. Cr Gough said it was not about the city council shrugging off its responsibility but allowing the businesses to be in control of their own destiny. •HAVE YOUR SAY: Are targeted rates a good idea to get the area back on its feet? Veterinary practice

Lymphoma Moya is a beautiful 4yr old Bull Mastiff cross who until earlier this year had been a perfectly healthy young dog. Her owners had noticed that over the past few days she hadn’t been quite her normal bouncy self, had gone off her food and developed a swelling under her throat. They bought her to the clinic and although on examination she seemed quite well she not only had enlarged lymph nodes around her neck but also around the front of her shoulders and at the back of her hind legs. Causes of this could be infection, an allergic reaction, immune mediated disease (where the body kills off its own cells) or cancer. Fine needles aspirates (FNA’s) were taken of Moya’s lymph nodes and sent to a veterinary laboratory. Taking an FNA is a painless procedure and in the majority of animals can be done without sedation. A small needle is inserted into the tissue that you want to sample and a small amount of cells are collected and put onto a slide.

Unfortunately, the results that came back from the laboratory confirmed that Moya had a malignant form of cancer known as Lymphoma. This form of cancer is one of the most commonly seen in dogs and often involves multiple organs around the body. To find out where the cancer had spread to Moya had blood tests and thoracic and abdominal x-rays and ultrasound scans performed. The Lymphoma had spread to organs within her chest and abdomen as well as within her lymph nodes – she had high stage B cell-Lymphoma. The results were discussed with her owners who decided that they would like to go ahead with treating her further. With this type of Lymphoma treatment is not surgical, but medical; usually with chemotherapy. We are in contact with a number of specialist Veterinary Oncology clinics in Australia and we contacted them straight away. Within 24 hours they had produced an entire report on Moya, her cancer and different chemotherapy options that they recommended. These treatment options varied from palliative care with steroids through to multidrug chemotherapy options. Moya’s family decided to go ahead with the preferred primary treatment option lasting 15 weeks. Moya started her chemotherapy the following day coming into the clinic every Friday for a blood test to check her red and white blood cell levels and for administration of her drugs intravenously. Throughout the entire duration of treatment, she was very well behaved and tolerated the chemotherapy drugs extremely well, with hardly any noticeable side effects. She was always ready for her treats and walk after her drugs had been given! At the end of the 15 weeks Moya was in complete remission and four weeks later still appears to be. Her owners report that

she is better than ever and when she visited last week she was rolling around as normal for her tummy to be tickling whilst we were trying to take her blood test! There is a chance that the Lymphoma will come back but for the moment she is happy, has a new lease of life and is enjoying her time at home with her family. Informing a client that their special friend has a form of cancer, is one of the awful parts of my job. It is such a dreaded disease with often fatal consequences and often at the time of diagnosis, the disease has well advanced. Due to many cancers having malignant potential, speed of diagnosis and treatment is necessary to have any chance of remission. Many hard decisions have to be made and that is when you can rely on us to do our job. We have the necessary skills and diagnostics to diagnose the type of cancer your pet has and then we employ the specialized services of Oncology consultants in Australia to get the most successful chemotherapy protocol for your pet. That’s often the hardest part as the administration of chemotherapy usually goes really smoothly. Pets rarely have side effects, the drugs are painless if given properly, your pet is treated as an outpatient and we often see improvement quickly, if we are going to be successful. I have first hand experience in the process as my beautiful dog Lola developed kidney cancer last year and received four rounds of chemo. If anyone wants to discuss the process of cancer diagnosis and treatment for your pet, please give the clinic a call.

By Murray Williams, Papanui Heritage Group. IN THE last article we looked at the issues confronting Papanui citizens in 1989 through the lens offered by the Papanui Herald. Today we travel back to April 17, 1973; at this stage the local community newspaper was called the Herald. It was owned, managed and edited by Des King who operated the weekly tabloid from premises at 22 Main North Rd. The Papanui library had decided to combat falling membership by allocating $50 to buy paperbacks as they appealed to young people and were also cheap in comparison to hardbacked volumes. Papanui High School was wrestling with the problem of a rapidly rising roll; the Parent Teachers’ Association wanted this stabilised in the interests of maintaining a community atmosphere although the principal, Mr E Fancy, could foresee that the day would come when 1250 students would attend the school.

THE ‘OINK’ BEATER: This model was promoted as the car of the future in comparison to the then current generation cars which were portrayed as gas guzzlers and money stealers. Hutchinson Motors, on the corner of Papanui Rd and Blair Ave, was advertising a new Ford Escort. This model was promoted as the car of the future in comparison to the then current generation of ‘oinks’ which were portrayed as gas guzzlers and ‘money stealers’. The price for a new

Escort was just over $3000, which may seem cheap for a new car but when translated to 2016 dollars would have cost $36,000 for a very basic model. Meanwhile, the Papanui Service Station was promoting its ‘Rub a Dub’ car wash which it advertised as the only fully automatic service available in Christchurch. This luxury cost $1.50 ($18 in 2016 value). Motorists who purchased their petrol at this outlet were also eligible to win ‘instant’ prizes. Suckling Brothers were offering positions as footwear machinists in their new premises ‘situated one minute’s walk from Northlands.’ The advertisement posed the question to locals ‘why go to town when you can work in Papanui?’ Four decades later there are few openings in local manufacturing as cheaper imports now dominate the market for consumer goods. Easter was imminent and most of Papanui’s oldest churches offered plenty of options for formal commemoration.

Raffle raises $25,000 for families

CHILDREN AND a charity hospital will benefit from more than $25,000 raised by the Rotary Club of Papanui. A recent trailer raffle run by the club in conjunction with Mitre 10 MEGA, and supported by Allprint, raised $25,361 after selling 8000 tickets. All proceeds will be shared between the Papanui Rotary Children in Need Trust and the Christchurch Charity Hospital. Trustee Tony Tizzard is delighted the trust’s share of the proceeds will support families with an identified need, such as enabling children to have school uniforms and attend camps. The proceeds will also assist the Canterbury Charity Hospital with the establishment of their two new oral surgery units. Rotary Papanui proposed the idea to Mitre 10 MEGA

Papanui owner Andrew Smith who said it was a great way of contributing to the community.

the main prize. Bishopdale resident Marie Gaskill won the trailer valued at $7520, Casebrook resident Jo Fitchett was second and won a barbecue, and Rangiora resident Gail Lyes was third receiving a Mitre 10 voucher valued at $500. A spokesperson for the club said this was not ‘just another raffle’. “This was an active and collaborative partnership between a charitable organisation and a local business to make a valuable difference to our community.” Rotary Papanui wants to thank Mitre 10 MEGA, Allprint, Northlands and the many people behind the scenes who worked so willingly, and it looks forward to future opportunities to join forces for the community.

WINNER: The Rotary Club of Papanui raised more than $25,000 for children and a charity hospital by holding a raffle. Marie Gaskell won first prize, a trailer full of goods. Mitre 10 MEGA manager Josh Tasker (centre) and president of Papanui Rotary John Allen presented her with the prize.

The club bought the trailer and Mr Smith filled it with goods which were raffled off as

ONE YEAR out from the election Waimakariri MP Matt Doocey has opened a Belfast office to connect more with his constituents south of the river. It will add to his offices in Rangiora and Kaiapoi, as well as his mobile caravan service that operates once a month in Woodend and Oxford. Speaker of the House David Carter opened the office at 731 Main North Rd, Belfast, on October 17. “It was great to have the support of the local community in opening this new office in Belfast,” Mr Doocey (right) says. Mr Doocey said the new office would make him more accessible to residents living in northern Christchurch. “I have already started meeting constituents at my new office and the feedback I am receiving on how much easier it is for people living south of the Waimak River to meet with me has confirmed this was a good way to be accessible,” he said. His Rangiora and Kaiapoi office are open four days a week and his Belfast office will be open two days a week with a view to increasing this if the demand is there.

Brightest young sporting talent OUTSTANDING TEAM: The Burnside High School volleyball team were rewarded for their national dominance over the last two years, taking home the most outstanding team of young sportswomen award. They shared the award with Villa Maria. Burnside won their second straight national title in Palmerston North in April. They defeated Tauranga Girls’ College in a tight four-set tournament final 3-1 (25-19, 25-27, 25-22, 26-24).

SPORTS THE 26TH Zonta secondary schools sports awards dinner was held on Thursday night. The annual event, initiated by the Zonta Club of Christchurch South in 1990 to celebrate the sporting achievements of talented young Cantabrians, is a highlight of the year for award winners. For many, recognition at the awards heralds the beginning of long-standing and highly successful international careers. The judging of the awards was undertaken this year by Anita Sutherland, Mike De Bono, Jon Peters,

Aaron Webb and Dave Harrison. They had the challenging task of selecting finalists and winners from a total of 150 nominations (counting teams as one) received from 21 schools in the Canterbury area, including Kaikoura, North Canterbury and the West Coast. Zonta International is a service organisation, made up of business and professional women, committed to raising the status of women worldwide. This is undertaken through service, advocacy and fundraising to support chosen causes. PHOTOS: LEE MALZARD PHOTOGRAPHY

BEST SPORTSWOMAN: The ability to turn heads on the netball court and the water has seen St Margaret’s College student Lily Marshall (left) win the best all-round young sportswoman award. The highlight for Marshall came earlier in the year when she was named in the New Zealand secondary school netball team. The defender captained her school at the national secondary school tournament in Hutt Valley this month, where the team finished seventh. Marshall also represented St Margaret’s at this year’s Maadi Cup national secondary school rowing championship. She was part of the eight which finished second in the Levin Jubilee Cup final. The year 13 student also competed in a four which finished in the top 10 at the regatta.

MOST VALUABLE SPORTSMAN: Burnside High School first XV captain Cam Russell (right) took out the most valuable contribution to a team by a young sportsman award. Russell was the co-winner of this year’s UC Championship player of the year award. The flanker played well in excess of 50 games for Burnside in his four seasons with the first XV. After first making the squad as a year 10 student in 2013, Russell went on to captain the team in 2015. The year 13 student has also been a part of the Crusaders Knights under-18 development programme and this year helped Burnside win the South Island co-ed school championship.

honoured at 26th Zonta awards

OUTSTANDING YOUNG SPORTSWOMEN: Villa Maria College’s first XI hockey team also won the most outstanding team of young sportswomen award after securing their first ever national title this year. In September, the team won the Christchurch schools’ premier league before capturing their maiden Federation Cup title in Auckland. The team had only one loss over the entire season against St Margaret’s College in the premier league. It was also the perfect farewell for six students who played their final season for the school.

The St Andrew’s College clay target shooting team of Jacob Warnock, Lyndon Arundell, Jimmy Field, Mason Gardener and Laurence Arundell won the most outstanding team of young sportsmen award. They made history recently when they won the team points title at the New Zealand secondary school trap shooting championships. They scored 295/300 points, which has never been achieved before.

Middleton Grange student William Stedman took home two Zonta sports awards. Stedman won the award for most outstanding achievement by a young sportsman with a disability. He then received the biggest award – most outstanding achievement by a young sportsman specialising in one sport. The 16-year-old became a double Olympic medallist this year when he won bronze in both the men’s 400m T36 and men’s 800m T36 final at the Rio Paralympics. Stedman, who has cerebral palsy, also competed in the long jump at Rio. Tackling issues in Waimairi We continue asking city councillors in the north-west to give us their views on issues. This week newly-elected Waimairi city councillor Raf Manji talks about some of the issues he feels need addressing in the ward The predominant issue in the Waimairi Ward is the threat of new industrial activity on the land between Hawthornden Rd and Russley Rd, known as NWRA3. The independent hearings panel has ruled that access through Hawthornden Rd would lead to intolerable levels of increased traffic, especially heavy traffic, for local residents, which makes the area entirely unsuitable for industrial development. However, the landowners have challenged this finding at the High Court and the community is awaiting the outcome with interest. A second concern of equal importance is the impact of the upcoming industrial park at the MAIL site on traffic along Avonhead Rd, Roydvale Ave and the surrounding local street network.

POTENTIAL BOTTLE STORE: A new liquor store has been proposed for 2A Trafford St.

The community wants a restriction on heavy vehicles above seven tonnes from using these roads to minimise safety risks to school children and pedestrians. There are also concerns that there should be no parking spillover from the industrial site on to the residential streets. This is an issue that the community board will be able to look at soon. The community is also keep-

ing a close eye on the development of a 6.3ha rural site for residential living, which may put further strains on the water and sewerage network. Parking issues around the Russley Business Park and Avonhead Mall need addressing, as do general issues of traffic and congestion in the surrounding areas. The community would also like to work with the city council to promote public recognition of the significance and heritage of Avonhead Park Cemetery and look at developing a local community centre. We are fortunate to have a well-organised community group in the Waimairi Ward and I look forward to working with them over the next term.

We asked readers if they thought Harewood needs another liquor store, as one is being proposed for the cnr of Harewood Rd and Trafford St Graeme Wood, Harewood We are opposed to this liquor outlet being located at 2A Trafford St. The area is catered for at Bishopdale and also the new industrial area around 500 Wairakei Rd. Nunweek Park, which is close by, is a dumping ground for KFC and McDonalds litter, as well as cans and bottles. Cut the crime – stop the outlet opening. David Wagstaff I agree that there is no need for another liquor outlet in Harewood. There are enough social problems at present without adding more

Spotted any lonely cones? There are a lot of lost, lonely road cones out there. We want to bring them home. We’re tidying up the streets as the SCIRT programme winds down. Please help us track down stray cones no longer on the job. We’ll put them back to work, or send them off to the giant cone melting pot in the sky.

The CONEMOBILE is coming your way. SCIRT’s CONEMOBILE is hitting the streets to collect any road cones that have gone astray. Let us know if you’ve spotted a lost or wayward cone.

to the problem. It is bad enough trying to get traffic lights on the Harewood Rd and Gardiners Rd intersection and to have this come up is stupid. It must be the people in the area that have the final say, not some authority who seem to not listen to the people. Bruce and Doreen Tulloch, Harewood Given the great damage alcohol abuse causes, there is no justification for increasing availability in suburban residential areas, especially making it available late at night on all days of the week. Liquor is already accessible at shopping areas nearby. The harm from encouraging impulse buying and increased consumption (including in parks and public areas) far outweighs any community benefits.

DANCING: Milla Downing, 9, Sam Carrell, 9, and Tavia Ralston, 9, played the part of Irish dancers.

ON STAGE: Brooke Knowles, 11, Maia Oldfield, 10, and Annabelle Brownsword played the ‘Andrews sisters’.

Pupils perform musical SENIOR PUPILS at Cotswold recently put on a show called The Button Box – a musical written by John Gleadall. It was a story about Jack, played by nine-year-old Carter Rhodes, and Alice, played by 11-year-old Sophie Drury, who stay with their grandparents and become bored on a

wet day. The children knock over grandma’s button box, spilling an array of buttons onto the floor. Grandma was played by 11-year-old Willow Kite, and grandpa was played by 11-year-old Jessie Winter. The children ask her to tell them where all the buttons

came from and the story behind each button is revealed in songs. The school put on two evening performances and a daytime performance for parents and the community. “Going up on the stage was scary but really exciting,” said Henry Goodall, 9.

Scholarship for famine effort RANGI RURU students got behind the World Vision 40-hour famine, raising $3500 and earning the school a scholarship. More than a third of the entire student body took part in this year’s famine after Lily Lee and Willa Jones led the school in its fundraising drive. Because of their efforts the school was awarded a World Vision senior scholarship award.

Flossie van der Pol was chosen as the recipient of the scholarship which entitled her to four days of global education, leadership development and social action training in Auckland. “Meeting refugees at the Refugee Resettlement Camp [in Auckland] was really eyeopening as I could see how much they appreciated having security after their years of extreme hardship,” she said.

Mall-walking to stay fit By Hanna Reynolds NORTHLANDS ISN’T open, but Karen Couch is heading inside. She’s not alone. Dressed in walking gear, around 100 people are entering the mall, but they’re not planning to shop. Every Tuesday and Thursday at 8am, the mall opens its doors early to the Kiwifit walking group. The free community walking programme is a chance for people who may not be working to socialise while staying active. Karen remembered the exact day it started, April 17, 2005, and bakes a cake every year to celebrate. “I enjoy the friends. I miss it when I’m away.” It’s a good place to exercise “without tripping over trees or walking on dog poo and uneven surfaces,” she said, and the coffee afterwards was an incentive. Joce White, 71, has attended both weekly sessions since the earthquakes. “It’s pleasant, flat and warm and we stop for a coffee afterwards. It’s very social. You get to know a lot of people.” She used to walk around the mall three to four times before her back surgery but is now pleased to make it around the

500m circuit with her walker once. When she stops for a rest on the seats, fellow walkers greet her by name. It’s a social event. “This is the whole point, the laughter.” Heather Johnston, 74, is in her 10th year of setting her alarm early to attend. Heather had a fall when walking outside and the threat of it happening again on the uneven pavements keeps her coming back to the warm, flat space. Surgery is a familiar thread among the walkers, with hip and

knee replacements common. Having had her hip done four months ago, it was “use it or lose it,” for Barbara Wilson. For four years she has travelled 30min to attend the Thursday session and enjoys not having to watch for cars in the safety and warmth of the mall. Northlands marketing manager, Rebecca Sheppard said there were about 180 members of the walking group with an average age of 73. The group meets at the entrance near House of Travel on Main North Rd.

Best to hope that this worm found in the backyard of Star Media director Charlotte Smulders is the parent. If not, there may be a wriggly worm around Merivale even larger than this. The paving stone is half a metre wide – that is one king size worm.

Replacement dentures now just a phone call away with 3D technology Keeping up-to-date with the latest techniques in denture technology is one of the keys to the success of John Batchelor’s company, Duchenne Dental, so it’s no surprise that John has been closely following the development of 3D printing of dentures and dental implants. “I knew it was something that would be of enormous benefit to our patients,” he explains. “When I was confident in the advanced technology and its affordability, then I knew it would be a good option.” His research took him to the bi-annual International Dental Show in Cologne and to some of the world’s leading dental and IT companies, helping John decide that the timing was right to bring this technology to New Zealand. “I formed relationships with leading companies in dental scanning technology and 3D printing in several countries. We now have the technology and expertise to ensure our clients here in New Zealand receive world class treatment and products.” Unexpected client benefits Duchenne now 3D print all their chrome frames and partial bases, and have also started using 3D print technology in full upper and lower dentures.

John says there are numerous benefits to Duchenne’s clients, including providing patients with a quicker and more economical service, and dentures and implants that are more accurate and personalised. “A bonus is that all models are stored digitally so wherever you are, if you need a replacement denture or tooth, we can quickly and easily print one. And in many cases patients don’t even need to visit the surgery!” Duchenne Dental has manufactured over 300 partial dentures and both they and their patients are delighted with the results. for more information phone tristan pattinson or John batchelor on (03)2604188

Pine bark may support brain function Recent news from Auckland University of Technology has people excited about a pine bark extract called Enzogenol. AUT reported that patients suffering memory loss and other brain problems after a traumatic brain injury recovered better when taking Enzogenol compared to a control group. Enzogenol is not a new product, though. In fact, it was developed at Canterbury University and has been in our health food shops for over 10 years. According to ENZO Nutraceuticals, the company that produces the product, a number of research studies have shown how Enzogenol can help improve brain function and support

healthy blood circulation. The amazing thing is, it is made from the bark of New Zealand Pinus Radiata with an extraction method that uses only purified water. Apparently, the pine bark is full of healthy plant compounds that are naturally part of our diet when we eat fruits and vegetables. Yet, the pine bark is loaded with these natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds and makes a great starting material for this health product. Keen on a chewing a bit of pine bark? Further detailed information is available from the Natural Health Advisers at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton, phone: 388-5757 – We are Always Happy to Help!

“Treadle” for Healthy Feet “Treadling” on an Aircycle circulation booster is a highly effective way to keep your feet healthy,” says Lynne Taylor, Manager of Diabetes Christchurch. Maintaining good blood flow in the feet is key to preventative foot care and is simple with an Aircycle. The “treadle” exercise works the calf muscles and pumps the blood. “It’s in our feet that arthritis, complications of diabetes, including nerve, neuropathy and circulatory disorders often show up,” says Lynne. ”It’s important to heed the first signs, as loss of feeling can mean abrasions, ulcers and other foot problems go undetected or do not heal, sometimes leading to amputation”. By maintaining good blood flow with the Aircycle, people frequently

report numb, tingling feet regain feeling, normal colour and flexibililty, swollen ankles and cramps are relieved and ulcers heal. No need for special exercise times with the Aircycle. Just use it gently while having coffee, watching TV or chatting on the phone. Pop it in your pocket to take to use under your desk in the office or when travelling by car or plane. It’s so easy to protect and care for your feet with an Aircycle. Aircycles are available in pharmacies, Diabetes Christchurch, www.aircycle.co.nz or call 0800 14 14 15.

Improve Prostate Greater independence in your own home Health Naturally! The prostate is a small walnut shaped male organ located beneath the urinary bladder and wrapped around the urethra or urinary tube. It is of little significance for most men until the late 40’s when for a large percentage of men it tends to enlarge and affect normal urination by restricting flow through the urethra. This condition is known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia or BPH. BPH reduces the ability of the bladder to evacuate completely causing common symptoms like wanting to urinate more frequently (especially annoying at night and as it affects sleep quality), difficulty starting urination, dribbling after urination and pain with urination. The word benign in BPH is very significant as it means an enlargement of the prostate that isn’t cancer. However BPH should always be diagnosed by a M.D., as there is always the chance of prostate cancer. Once diagnosed as BPH it can often be managed quite well with herbal and nutritional remedies and without the side effects of prescription drugs used for this condition. Saw Palmetto is a herb that has been used for centuries for BPH of the prostate.

A review of 18 doubleblinded studies found an average improvement of 72% of BPH symptoms in Saw Palmetto users. Researchers have found Saw Palmetto to inhibit the formation of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and DHT is the main reason for the prostate to enlarge, and to be a risk factor for prostate cancer and hair loss. Phellodendron amurense inner bark is another herb that has been found to protect against BPH and recent research has shown it to be protective against prostate tumor development in laboratory studies. Lycopene is a potent antioxidant with numerous health benefits including cancer and BPH protective benefits. Fatty acids from the seeds of Pumpkin, Evening Primrose and Flax have been shown to be supportive of prostate and general good health. Further information is available from our Natural Health Advisers, and Naturopath at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton, 388-5757. We are Always Happy to Help!

THE ABBA Show jets in for a full national tour this month, playing at the Isaac Theatre Royal on Wednesday 9th November. Following more than 4000 international performances to date, including recent tours of North America and South Africa, the show’s NZ tour will take in an exhausting 22 different venues in just 34 days. Far from being ‘just another cover band’, The ABBA Show is a full-scale concert experience and stage show featuring 2.5 hours of live musical performance with a live band, replica costumes, theatrical lighting and effects, and all the ABBA hits. And despite Mamma Mia (the musical) still doing the rounds, promoter John Van Grinsven from Showtime Australia is confident that fans will recognize the distinct and worthwhile experience that The ABBA Show offers. “They’re completely different shows. Mamma Mia is a great musical but The ABBA Show does more of an authentic concert experience. We’ve worked really hard to make it just the way the fans will remember it if they were lucky enough to see the originals perform live. It really is a unique show.”

The starring cast of the show - comprising Brits Hannah Pocock as Agnetha and Jenna Ball as Frida and Aussies Cameron Charters as Bjorn and Brent McMullen as Benny - has put in countless hours to achieve the attention to detail that the show is famous for. Tickets on sale now at Ticketek and the Isaac Theatre Royal.

Be in to WIN a double pass Star Media has a double to pass to give away to ‘e ABBA Show taking place at the Isaac eatre Royal on Wednesday 9th November 2016, 8pm. To go into the ticket draw, email your name and daytime contact phone number, along with the answer to: “Hannah Pocock as -------” to: jo.fuller@starmedia.kiwi Subject: ABBA SHOW Competition. Entries close 5pm Monday 7th November. The winner will be notified.
